How it spreads

Direct contact with infected blood, body fluids or contaminated materials; some infections begin after animal exposure.

Symptoms and context

Fever, marked weakness, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea; bleeding can occur later.

Prevention

Avoid contact with infected body fluids and follow outbreak guidance. Vaccines approved for Ebola virus disease do not protect against every subtype.

Call ahead for urgent care after a possible exposure followed by illness, and tell the service about your exposure or travel.
